☀️ Crete is Calling: Why This Greek Island Stole My Heart

This month’s Destination Spotlight is all about a place that left a big impression on me: Crete, Greece.

We just returned from an incredible trip exploring this diverse and beautiful island. On the West Coast, we wandered through charming towns like Chania, soaked in the wild beauty of Balos Lagoon, and experienced the warmth of locals who truly make you feel like family. The culture runs deep here with every bite of food, every handmade item in the shops, every ancient ruin has a story to tell.

Then, we headed over to the East Coast, where we based ourselves in Elounda. This part of the island brings pure tranquility, gorgeous beaches like those near Agios Nikolaos, elegant beachfront resorts, and a visit to the haunting yet beautiful island of Spinalonga added a different layer to our experience.

If you’re thinking of adding Crete to your travel wish list, know this: Crete is not a stopover island. It’s the largest of the Greek islands, and with so much to explore, you’ll want at least a full week (and even then, you’ll leave wanting more).

But more than the scenery or the sunshine, what stood out most was the hospitality. The locals are proud of their island, eager to share it with you, and oh-so-generous with their food and their kindness.

Travel Tip: If you're planning to visit both the east and west coasts of Crete, consider flying into one airport (like Chania) and out of another (like Heraklion). It saves backtracking and lets you cover more ground without feeling rushed.

Whether you’re dreaming of Crete as a standalone adventure or planning to pair it with another Greek island, I’d love to help you bring that dream to life.

THIS MONTH'S DREAM DESTINATION: CRETE, GREECE

Stunning landscape of Crete, Greece.
Crete is Greece’s largest and most diverse island which is perfect for travelers looking to combine history, beaches, culture, and cuisine all in one trip. Most travelers reach Crete by flying from Athens (a quick 50-minute flight) into either Chania (CHQ) or Heraklion (HER), the island’s two main airports. From there, it's easy to rent a car and explore at your own pace. Crete is very drivable, with coastal roads, scenic mountain routes, and small villages waiting to be discovered. The island offers everything from Venetian harbors in Chania, to archeological wonders like Knossos, to secluded beaches and boutique wineries tucked away in the hills.
To truly experience Crete, plan for at least 7–10 days and consider splitting your time between the West and East coasts. The drive between Chania and Elounda takes about 3.5 hours, and it’s full of stunning coastal views along the way. Most hotels and resorts offer easy parking, and local tavernas are scattered throughout even the smallest villages, so you’re never far from a memorable meal.

Stay in Style: Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa
Tucked into the heart of Chania’s Old Town is a true gem: Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa which is part of the Small Luxury Hotels collection and a place that feels like home the moment you arrive. Run by the incredible Margarita, the 26th generation of her family to carry on this legacy, every corner of this boutique hotel is filled with history, elegance, and heart. Each room is unique, the service is unmatched, and the location? Absolutely perfect for exploring this magical town. But what truly sets it apart: you’re not just a guest here, you’re family.

Pallas Restaurant in Crete Athens not only known for its stunning views but the food is incredible! Not to be missed.

Taste Local Flavors: Pallas Restaurant
Nestled in a beautifully restored 1830s Venetian building along Chania’s historic Old Harbour, Pallas seamlessly blends elegant history with modern style. Listed among Crete’s top 20 most beautiful buildings, it's housed in what was once Ali Pasha’s residence and a customs house. The menu showcases Modern Mediterranean with a Cretan twist, featuring dishes like fresh fish, steak, inventive salads, local specialties, and even sushi in the evenings. For wine lovers, Pallas is a hidden gem: its cellar hosts more than 500 labels of Greek and international wines, along with a curated cocktail list and spirits.

Don’t Miss This: Explore Balos Lagoon & Hidden Isles by Private Boat
There’s no better way to experience the wild beauty of Crete’s west coast than by private boat tour to Balos Lagoon. Departing from Kissamos or Falassarna, you’ll cruise across turquoise waters with a local captain, skipping the crowds and reaching Balos. A dreamy stretch of white and pink sand surrounded by crystal-clear lagoon waters.
Along the way, you’ll explore hidden gems like Gramvousa Island, with its cliffside Venetian fortress, and secluded islets perfect for swimming or snorkeling. Many charters offer drinks, snacks, or even a light Cretan meal on board, making it a relaxed and luxurious day on the sea.
It’s the ultimate way to slow down, soak in Crete’s natural beauty, and discover parts of the island only accessible by water.
