5 Things to Know Before Road Tripping Around Iceland

Wanderlust Travel Group's Road Trip around Ring Road in Iceland in August.

Road tripping around Iceland is one of those travel experiences that sticks with you forever. Waterfalls appear out of nowhere, landscapes change by the minute, and some of the most memorable moments happen when you least expect them.

That said, driving in Iceland is very different from road trips elsewhere. A little preparation goes a long way and knowing these things ahead of time can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.

Here are five things you’ll be very glad you knew before hitting the road.

1. Gas Stations Can Be Few and Far Between on a Road Trip in Iceland

Outside of Reykjavík and the larger towns, gas stations aren’t something you’ll see on every corner. In some stretches, they can be surprisingly far apart.

The golden rule when road tripping around Iceland: fill up whenever you see a gas station, especially in rural areas. Don’t wait until the tank is low or assume another station is just around the bend. Iceland is not the place to test your luck or your fuel gauge.

2. Plan Fewer Stops Than You Think You Need

It’s tempting to pack your itinerary with “must-see” stops, but Iceland has a way of slowing you down, in the best possible way.

You’ll find yourself pulling over constantly for:

  • Waterfalls you didn’t know existed

  • Lava fields stretching for miles

  • Glaciers, black sand beaches, and dramatic viewpoints

Build in breathing room. Leave space for spontaneity. Iceland rewards travelers who go slow and allow the journey to unfold naturally.

3. Gravel Roads Are Common (and Totally Normal) when road tripping around Iceland

Even on well-known routes, gravel roads are part of the experience. This doesn’t mean you’ve gone the wrong way, it’s just Iceland being Iceland.

A few tips:

  • Drive slower than you would on paved roads

  • Allow extra time in your schedule

  • Strongly consider rental car insurance that covers gravel damage

That peace of mind is worth it, especially when you’re exploring more remote areas.

4. Summer Daylight Means Endless Exploring

If you’re traveling in late spring or summer, you’ll experience Iceland’s famous midnight sun. In some months, it barely gets dark at all.

This opens up incredible possibilities:

  • Explore early in the morning or late at night

  • Avoid crowds at popular sites

  • Experience Iceland’s quieter, more magical moments

Just remember to pace yourself when the sun never sets, it’s easy to forget how long you’ve been on the road.

5. Add the Wi-Fi Package When Renting a Car

Cell service in Iceland is generally good, but it can be spotty in more remote regions. Having in-car Wi-Fi makes a big difference.

It allows you to:

  • Keep maps working at all times

  • Check weather and road conditions

  • Feel more confident on long driving days

It’s a small upgrade that adds a lot of convenience and peace of mind.

The Real Magic of an Iceland Road Trip

Iceland isn’t about rushing from sight to sight. It’s about the journey, the pauses, the unexpected stops, and the moments you didn’t plan for at all.

With the right mindset (and a little preparation), a road trip here becomes more than just a vacation. It becomes a story you’ll be telling for years.

If you want help designing an Iceland road trip that balances must-see highlights with plenty of space to explore, wander, and breathe, that’s where I come in.
